Surrey Lawn Care: Grass to look its best

A Guide to Proper Mowing

Living in Surrey, BC, we’re blessed with lush green spaces and mild, wet winters that keep our lawns thriving year-round. However, that consistent moisture and temperate climate also means our grass grows quickly, especially during spring and summer months. Proper mowing techniques can make the difference between a patchy, stressed lawn and the envy of your neighborhood.

Timing Is Everything

In Surrey’s climate, you’ll likely need to mow every 7-10 days during peak growing season (April through September). The key is never cutting more than one-third of the grass blade length at once. This prevents shock to your lawn and helps maintain strong, healthy roots that can better withstand our occasional summer dry spells.

Height Matters

Keep your grass longer than you might think – around 2.5 to 3 inches is ideal for most Surrey lawns. Taller grass develops deeper roots, crowds out weeds naturally, and stays greener during those brief hot periods we experience in July and August. It also helps your lawn better absorb all that Pacific Northwest rain without becoming waterlogged.

Sharp Blades, Clean Cuts

Dull mower blades tear grass rather than cutting it cleanly, leaving brown, frayed tips that make your entire lawn look unhealthy. In our humid climate, these damaged grass tips are also more susceptible to fungal diseases. Sharpen your mower blades at least once per season, or consider having it done professionally.

Work With Surrey’s Weather

Never mow wet grass – something we deal with frequently here! Wet clippings clump together, potentially smothering sections of your lawn and clogging your mower. Wait for morning dew to evaporate before starting your mowing routine.

With consistent care and proper technique, your Surrey lawn can be a beautiful green space that enhances your property value and provides a perfect backdrop for those precious summer barbecues and family gatherings.
